3 Useful Time Management Tools for the Self Employed

The Office for National Statistics (ONS), recently published data that revealed that during the last quarter to the end of November 2013 there was a rise of 4.1% in the number of people describing themselves as self employed, this means that in the UK the number of people who describe themselves as self employed now stands at 4.37 million, or 14.5 per cent of the total workforce.

Most of these newly self employed will be what Stephanie Walsh of discoveringice.com classes location independent Workers, those who are fortunate to be able to work from anywhere with just a laptop and an internet connection.

Being a Self Employed Location Independent Worker may well sound very glamorous but it brings with it a number of Time Management Traps that can be fallen in to if we are not vigilant, (as well as sand in the keyboard if we are not careful)

I have written many times on the perils and distractions of working online. One minute you are doing ‘research’ and the next you are on your Facebook account chatting with friends or perhaps you find that you have strayed from the original area of research to researching next years holiday.

In her latest article Stephanie highlights three of her personal favourite time management tools, that she uses when she really needs to stay focused and get a job done.

I have been a big fan of Basecamp for a long time and use it to manage a whole range of activities and projects, the other two tools that are mentioned are RescueTime and Concentrate which were both new to me,  but both are  tools that can help to make you more aware of your distractions.   1. I’m sure we can all relate to this! I’m still guilty, but I don’t intend to correct this any time soon.

    Don’t get me wrong. A lot of times we read things on the internet and we find that we are doing so many things that are holding us back. But to try and correct everything simultaneously is just a recipe for disaster. Important thing is to master one habit at a time, and all the time.

    Just some food for thought there, heh.
