5 Surefire Ways to Be Productive TodayEveryone has had those days when it’s tough to feel productive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the change.  If you need to be productive today, here are 5 surefire ways to be productive today and help you get going and complete your necessary tasks.

5 Surefire Ways to Be Productive Today

1:  Give Yourself a Deadline.

It’s easy to put something off when you have an open-ended deadline.  Instead, set a deadline to complete specific tasks on your list for today.  Set a goal to end your workday at a specific time and have everything done before then.

This psychological trick will help you to get more done and allow you to have more time to enjoy your life instead of worrying about all you haven’t completed.

2:  Get Your Body Moving.

Exercise is something that people often put at the bottom of the list, but by exercising first thing each day you’ll help your brain to get more oxygen and nutrients.

This boost of nutrition will help boost productivity throughout the entire day.  But if you spend too much of your day sitting, the effect will fade.  Make sure to get up at least once an hour and move around – take a walk, jog in place, or do a few jumping jacks to get moving.

3:  Avoid Multi-Tasking.

Many people think that being able to multi-task is a good thing.  But in the end, it can mean that you’re not focusing on any one thing.  You may not be getting anything done well.

Instead, carve out specific times for specific tasks and focus only on them.  The phone and emails are often to blame for taking attention away.  Try to set a specific time for returning phone calls and emails.

If you’re expected to respond quickly, you may want to schedule several times each day to do this, but don’t leave it open-ended.

4:  Set a Timer for Tasks.

If you’re struggling to focus on getting something done, try setting a timer to focus on the task and then allow yourself to have a break.  This can help you to break a task into smaller chunks and avoid the paralysis of feeling overwhelmed.

5:  Write It Down.

If you’re the type of person who gets sidetracked with brainstorms of new ideas, it’s a good idea to write them down.  Keep a pen and paper handy (or an electronic document file) so that you can write down your ideas.

This allows you to put them down so you won’t forget them and get back to what you need to do.  At the end of the day you can look over your list and decide if you need to do anything with those brilliant ideas instead of taking time away from the rest of your day.

If you’re having one of those days, inplement some of the above and be productive today!!

  1. All valuable tips, Mike, to increase productivity. My favorite is to avoid multi-tasking, which I also wrote about this week. It’s a myth that many people continue to embrace which is actually counter-productive. Thank you.

  2. Always good to be reminded of how to be more productive. I’ve used all of these, and am much better at focusing on one task at a time now. That’s made such a difference! Using a timer, especially for client work, is a great way of keeping focused without distractions.

  3. Love these tips, coach Mike! Your advice is brilliant as usual. I like #5 because that’s what happens to me a lot! So now I keep about 3-4 notebooks filled with ideas classified into personal, work, business and creativity.

  4. Such great tips. I have ‘moving’ covered by walking the dog first thing. Now, much as I rail against it, by the time I am back from an hour’s walk, my brain is awake.
Lists are so important. And nothing gets done without a deadline!

  5. I have to admit that #3 – Avoid multitasking is tough for me. I find I constantly have to stop, pause and focus in order to get back on track. It’s a bad habit I really need to master. Thanks Mike, for the tips on how to get back in control!
