Workationing: A Nation Addicted To Work

Going away for the summer and taking your work with you? “Of course,” you might think, “Who can afford to leave business at home for two weeks?”

For many small business owners, the phone is a life-line. It breathes life into business every time it rings and a new opportunity knocks on the door and a new customer walks through. Leaving it at home is simply not an option for freelancers and solo-preneurs – who else will be there to capture the new business when it comes your way?

Switch off

Unfortunately, for many entrepreneurs and small business owners this means that the family holiday in the sun isn’t really a time to switch off. It’s business as usual.

But evidence shows that not being able to take a proper break from work can actually be damaging for your productivity. You can risk burning out if you try to keep going at full-steam ahead 100% of the time. Despite the risks, 44% of people admit to doing work while on holiday.

There’s a fear of being left behind or missing out on opportunities that means people are less inclined to switch off, even when they’re away. Taking a workation instead of a vacation may not be healthy, but it’s certainly popular.

Not only that, but taking business calls and checking emails abroad adds monetary cost to your summer holiday.

Plan ahead

How can you avoid becoming a slave to your work without missing out on any of the important opportunities that you will need to keep business ticking over when you return? Having a plan in place to ensure you don’t miss any new opportunities can help you relax better while you’re away, and ensure you don’t need to take your work phone with you.

One solution might be to outsource your call handling to an external company for the duration of your holiday. That way, you’ll still have access to your messages and can decide which ones are important enough to deal with right away, and which ones can wait until you get back.

If you work in a small team, leaving them to handle the burden of your workload can affect their productivity as they face an increased number of interruptions throughout their day. They need to get on with the work you’ve left behind as well as their own workloads and the additional strain of fielding inbound calls can be difficult to manage effectively.

Again, outsourcing could prove a great solution here, freeing up your team’s time to work and your time to play.

Expense?

Outsourcing is expensive though, right? It’s something that the big boys do when they outsource manufacturing to other continents. The small business owner surely can’t afford to have an external company handling their calls for two weeks?

Wrong. Outsourcing your call answering is in fact a very effective way to manage your time and save money. With a 24 hour service provider, you’ll capture every call made to you at any time of day, so you never miss another new business opportunity.

  1. We have such a blur between travel and work that it is hard to get away, but we ditched phones in April 2012 and just used Skype, Viber and Facetime! It was so liberating to not be available by phone! We got a sim card at the beginning of this year and I am still not used to receiving calls – and I used to be always on it. I love the peace now :)
