Procrastination – don’t let it ruin your time management

Do you have the procrastination bug? Do you spend more time finding excuses not to do the unpleasant tasks, than actually doing them? Don’t worry there is a lot of it about, you can beat it and improve your time management with the remedies outlined below.

Recognise what you find difficult:

Make a log of all those jobs that you procrastinate over. What makes you dislike them? Do you need more practice or training to deal with them – or are they merely boring?

Break it up:

Next time you’re faced with one of these jobs, and suffer a bout of procrastination, try splitting it into more manageable sections. Take a break in-between so you go back to the next part refreshed.

Get help:

If you find it difficult, get someone to work with you. This might well help you understand the job better and you’ll have no trouble next time. It also makes the work more interesting. Try offering to help someone else with their difficult work if they help you in return. It’s hard top procrastinate when working with others.

Set a deadline:

Beat procrastination by setting deadlines. These will spur you into action. Even better, promise to get the work to someone else by a particular date – then you can’t get out of it.

Block distractions:

Shut your door, if you can. Tell your switchboard you don’t want any calls, or put your answer phone on. Make it clear to colleagues you don’t want any interruptions. Ensure you have all the information and equipment you need before you begin, so you won’t wander away and allow yourself to be distracted. Then give the job your full attention.

Remember, the sooner you begin, the sooner you get the job out of the way and you can get on with something you enjoy more.
